FAQs

How will you show me the edits?

Track Changes in Microsoft Word is used to perform developmental and stylistic edits. Track Changes allows the editor to make comments in a sidebar and make changes directly in the text, and all changes will be shown. Collaborators can respond to these comments and accept or reject the suggested edits. If your book is in PDF form, I can also complete the work in this format.

What if I don’t agree with the edits?

This is your work, and all changes are made at your discretion. An editor’s role is to make suggestions to improve the material. When it comes to elements such as grammar, there is often little room for interpretation, but changes to content or structure are your call. Editing is an art as much as it is a craft, so parts of the process are subjective.

How quickly will my book be edited?

Since the answer depends on the scope of the project and on the type of edit being requested, this will be determined after we discuss your project’s particular editing needs. Please schedule a consultation with me (the first one is free!) for more information.

Can you get my book published?

I can steer you toward traditional publishers which are a good fit for your book, or I can offer guidance on how to self-publish your work, either on your own or through a hybrid publisher. Hybrid publishers cover part of the costs of publication.

What is a style sheet?

A style sheet is a document outlining elements such as which dictionary to use in an edit, and whether or not to use the Oxford comma. The sheet also can contain guidelines on punctuation usage, and lists of unusual words or spellings. Style sheets are a terrific resource for editors, and these forms are tailored to individual projects. If you are unsure of how to make a style sheet, I can create one for your project at no extra cost.

Do you edit unfinished manuscripts?

Yes. A stylistic edit and a proofread are better saved for complete works, but a developmental edit or impression reading can still be helpful in the early stages of writing.

Would you edit an article or a brochure?

Absolutely! I love reading history in any form and in all lengths of copy.

Do you offer sample edits?

Yes. If you’re unsure about committing to a full edit, there’s the option of receiving a sample edit (usually one to two pages) at a reduced rate.
